On the afternoon of Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese launched air attacks on the U.S. military at Pearl Harbor. It marked the start of what would become a prolonged fight between the two countries that would ultimately be known as World War II. The last-known survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack lived to be 108, and he remembers the tragedy well. Advertisement Joseph Lester, a retired firefighter and a Pearl Harbor survivor, died last week in San Francisco. His death came on Dec. 13, 2018, but Lester's family was not told about it until they read about it online, reported the Associated Press. According to the AP, Lester told his family he woke up early on Dec. 7, 1941, and "everything started to go dark," he said. "I tried to raise my arm, but I couldn't. I didn't know what was happening," Lester told the AP. "I tried to get up and get my glasses off, but I couldn't move. I called my wife, 'I'm all right, I'll get my glasses on.' She told me to get under my bed, and I don't remember that. My first thought was of Pearl Harbor. "I remembered Pearl Harbor and I think I fell asleep and was awakened by the sirens." Lester's body was found by his family three days later, and the cause of death was officially ruled as respiratory failure. "He was a very happy, cheerful person," his granddaughter, Pamela Lester, told the AP. "He kept smiling and laughing. I'm not sure if that helped his body. He certainly didn't complain." According to the AP, Lester's daughter has created a special pearl-themed bingo game to help raise money to cover the funeral and memorial costs. Lester's family originally planned to bury him at Fort McDowell National Cemetery in Scottsdale, Ariz., but Lester asked for his burial to be in the Pacific Northwest, where he grew up. The family made the arrangements in Portland, Ore., and Lester was buried on Dec. 20, 2018. According to the AP, Lester's family has started a GoFundMe campaign to pay for the funeral and memorial services for Lester and his wife, Aline. So far, more than $21,000 has been raised. "He just had a spark in his eyes," Lester's granddaughter, Pamela, told the AP. "
