The binding of TCR-ligand complexes to the Fc receptor (FcR) of human monocytes is of critical importance in the triggering of human T cell responses. However, the precise TCR recognition motif within FcR remains unclear. We describe the first structural insights into the molecular basis for the interaction of the murine TCR with FcR. By using recombinant adenovirus to express CD3-TCR chimeric molecules, we demonstrate that the I-E alpha CD3-TCR is capable of binding to the FcR-bearing monocytes, whereas the CD3-TCR chimeras with the CD3-Ig transmembrane regions of human TCR alpha and beta chains fail to bind the monocyte FcR.

In a spread spectrum communications system, the information data stream is modulated using a spreading signal that may be a pseudo-random sequence. For example, the information data stream may be modulated by a sinusoidal carrier signal that is modulated by the pseudo-random sequence. Because the information data stream is modulated by the pseudo-random sequence, the transmitted signal has a much higher bandwidth than the information data stream. A receiver in a spread spectrum communications system receives the transmitted signal and demodulates the signal to recover the information data stream. If a particular carrier signal is not properly demodulated, interference may be generated. Some narrowband interferers can also be referred to as narrowband jamming signals or narrowband interferers. If a particular carrier signal is not properly demodulated, interference may be generated in other receiver systems that also receive the same carrier signal. It is desirable to reduce the effects of narrowband interference in a spread spectrum communications system. The present invention provides a method and apparatus for reducing the effects of narrowband interference in a spread spectrum communications system. A received signal is demodulated by a first receiver. The demodulated signal is processed to produce a first value indicative of the strength of the received signal. The first value is compared to a first threshold. If the first value exceeds the first threshold, a received signal is received and demodulated by a second receiver. A difference signal is produced. The difference signal is then processed to produce a second value indicative of the difference between the first value and the second value. A threshold ratio is produced based on the second value and the first value. The received signal is also demodulated by the second receiver. A third value is produced based on the demodulated signal. The third value is compared to a third threshold. If the third value exceeds the third threshold, the received signal is rejected.
